Woman ‘blown by helicopter’ had ‘violent’ death

On March 4, 2022, a tragic incident at Derriford Hospital in Devon led to the untimely death of 87-year-old Jean Langan. Her family has expressed their deep sorrow, stating that the “violent manner of her death has affected us all.”

Mrs. Langan was at the hospital for an audiology appointment when she was caught in the downwash from a coastguard helicopter that was landing on the helipad. This rapid change in air pressure caused her to be blown over, resulting in severe injuries. During an inquest held at Exeter Coroner’s Court, pathologist Dr. Amanda Jeffery confirmed that Mrs. Langan died from a head injury caused by falling backward and striking the ground.

The inquest revealed that Mrs. Langan suffered a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain, and a tear at the back of her scalp. She passed away approximately three hours after the incident. CCTV footage shown during the inquest depicted the moment the helicopter landed, with Mrs. Langan and her niece being knocked to the ground, prompting bystanders to rush to their aid.

Retired senior coroner Ian Arrow noted that the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had already looked into the incident, and individual testimonies from the helicopter pilots were not presented in court.

Mrs. Langan’s family described her as a vibrant individual who was “always on the go,” a “keen walker,” and someone who loved nature. They shared that her sudden and tragic death has left a profound impact on their lives.

The inquest is set to continue throughout the week as the community seeks answers and closure regarding this unfortunate event.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of safety measures around busy areas like hospital helipads. Our thoughts are with Mrs. Langan’s family during this difficult time.
