Remembering Arumugam Kandasamy: A Legacy of Resilience

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Arumugam Kandasamy, the oldest surviving worker of the notorious ‘Death Railway’ connecting Thailand and Myanmar. He left us at the age of 97, on the early morning of November 9, after a brief hospitalization.

His son, A. Sudhagaran, age 45, expressed the family’s deep sorrow over their loss. “We are all deeply saddened by the passing of our father,” he said, describing Arumugam as a devoted father, grandfather, and a true family hero. Since the death of his beloved wife, Kalayanee, 16 years ago, Arumugam had dedicated his life to caring for his children, guiding them through life’s challenges.

Sudhagaran shared fond memories of his father, highlighting his cheerful demeanor and robust health, which continued even into his late 90s. Arumugam was not just a pillar of strength for his family—he was also an inspiring figure in his community, frequently invited to speak at local schools and share his incredible life experiences. His sharp memory and lively spirit were remarkable, especially for someone nearing a century of life.

Arumugam was blessed with a large family, which included 13 children, 38 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Each family member has benefited from the love and values instilled by both parents, and his passing leaves an irreplaceable void. Sudhagaran added, “I am very grateful for the upbringing provided by both my parents, as all of us siblings have succeeded in our careers. We will miss him dearly.”

Family and friends are coming together to honor Arumugam’s memory. They will gather at the family’s home, Rumah Rakyat, located at Linggi Port Dickson, to pay their last respects. A cremation ceremony is set to take place tomorrow, allowing everyone to reflect on the profound impact Arumugam had on their lives.

As we remember Arumugam Kandasamy, let us celebrate a life filled with resilience, love, and an enduring legacy that will live on through his family for generations to come.
