In a heartbreaking incident, Mainak Pal, a 44-year-old professor from the philosophy department at Jadavpur University, was discovered dead in a hotel room in Uttarakhand. His body was found in the bathroom, lying in a pool of blood, with initial investigations suggesting that it may be a case of suicide.
Pal had traveled to Uttarakhand with two friends but returned alone, checking into a hotel in Lalkuan, located in the Nainital district. Concerned for his well-being, his family reached out to the hotel staff when he failed to answer their calls. Upon entering his room, the staff made the grim discovery of his body, which showed signs of cuts on his neck and hands. Following an autopsy, his remains are being transported back to Kolkata.
Mainak Pal was a distinguished academic, having excelled in his studies at Presidency College and Jadavpur University, where he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with first-class honors. He further pursued his MPhil and PhD at Jadavpur University, showcasing his dedication to education and research. Known for his love of the mountains, Pal often spent his vacations exploring nature.
His colleagues are in shock over his untimely passing. Professor Parthapratim Roy, general secretary of the Jadavpur University Teachers Association, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We have lost a brilliant man and a good researcher. This is a significant loss for the university.” Pal had previously taught at a government college before joining Presidency University and later moving to Jadavpur University in 2022.
Debjyoti Konar, registrar at Presidency University, remembered Pal as an exceptional teacher who was well-loved by his students. “He was extraordinary as a person and maintained good relationships across departments. His death is a tremendous loss for the education system, and he had the potential to achieve great things in the future,” Konar remarked.
