It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Brian Wheeler, the beloved radio voice of the Portland Trail Blazers from 1998 until 2019. Known affectionately as “Wheels,” Brian passed away at the age of 62 after battling a long illness.
During his impressive career, Brian lent his voice to a number of NBA teams, including the Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, and Chicago Bulls, before finding his true home in Portland for 21 seasons. He captured the hearts of basketball fans with his signature catchphrase, “Boom shakalaka!” and earned recognition for his work, including being named Oregon Sportscaster of the Year in 2007.
The Trail Blazers organization expressed their condolences and admiration in a heartfelt statement, saying, “His love for the game and passion for the Trail Blazers came through in every radio call, making each play a thrill for every listener tuning in.”
Brian Wheeler’s unique style and enthusiasm for the sport made him a cherished figure among fans and players alike. His contributions to the game will not be forgotten, and he will always be remembered as a key part of the Trail Blazers’ history.
