On September 6, Waffle House announced the sad news that its CEO, Walt Ehmer, passed away at the age of 58 after battling a long illness. In a heartfelt statement shared with the media, the company expressed their deep sorrow, saying, “He will be greatly missed by his entire Waffle House family.” More information about Ehmer’s remarkable 30+ year career at Waffle House is expected to be shared soon.
“For now, we know all of you join us in extending our deepest condolences to Walt’s family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the company added.
Ehmer is survived by his three children, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Starting his career with Waffle House in 1992, Ehmer climbed the ranks to become president in 2002 and later took the role of CEO. His leadership spanned over decades, helping guide the iconic diner chain to success.
In addition to his leadership at Waffle House, Ehmer was known for his dedication to community service. He was an active member of the Atlanta Police Foundation’s board of trustees. On September 7, the foundation shared an emotional tribute, stating, “Walt was a dedicated leader, tireless advocate for public safety, and an unwavering supporter of our mission to build a safer, stronger Atlanta.”
The statement continued: “His passion for community service and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others will leave a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.”
Ehmer’s passing has also drawn tributes from local leaders. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his condolences, highlighting Ehmer’s lasting impact on the community. “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Walt Ehmer, the CEO of Waffle House and a proud Georgia Tech alumnus,” Dickens shared. “His leadership, dedication, and warmth touched the lives of many, both within the Waffle House family and beyond. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy.”
Walt Ehmer was deeply admired for his leadership philosophy, which emphasized teamwork and humility. In a 2020 speech at his alma mater, Georgia Tech, he described Waffle House as “one family,” where every restaurant operates like a close-knit community. “Everybody does the same thing, everybody wears one uniform,” he said, underscoring the importance of unity and collaboration.
Ehmer believed strongly in putting both customers and employees first, famously stating, “There’s no place for ego on a team. The higher up on the ladder you go, the more you have to make sure your people are successful.”
Waffle House, founded in 1955, now has over 1,900 locations across 25 states, and Ehmer’s legacy of service and leadership will remain a lasting influence on the company and community he served so passionately.
Walt Ehmer’s passing marks the loss of a beloved leader who devoted over 30 years to Waffle House and his community.
