Ex-NFL player gets prison time in death of 5-year-old girl in Las Vegas

In a heartbreaking turn of events, former professional football player Cierre Wood has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter. The tragic incident occurred in April 2019 in Las Vegas, leaving the community and sports fans alike in shock.

A Heartbreaking Case

The case centers around the untimely death of La’Rayah Davis, a 5-year-old girl who suffered fatal injuries at Wood’s Las Vegas apartment. On April 9, 2019, La’Rayah died from blunt force trauma, according to the coroner’s office. Her death led to a thorough investigation, ultimately resulting in charges against both Wood and the child’s mother, Amy Taylor.

Cierre Wood’s Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

In April 2023, Cierre Wood, now 33, reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse, securing a deal that dismissed additional felony charges initially filed against him. As part of this agreement, Wood entered what is known as an Alford plea, which is a formal admission of guilt while still allowing him to maintain his innocence.

On Tuesday, Wood was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for the murder charge. In addition, Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth ordered him to serve a consecutive sentence of 28 months to six years for the child abuse charge. This means Wood will serve both sentences back-to-back, further extending his time in prison.

Amy Taylor’s Involvement and Plea Deal

Amy Taylor, the child’s mother, was also charged in connection with her daughter’s death. Earlier this year, Taylor, 31, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse as part of her own plea deal with prosecutors. The specifics of her sentencing have not been detailed, but her involvement has added another layer of tragedy to this case.

Cierre Wood’s Football Career:

Before this tragic incident, Cierre Wood had a promising football career. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and later had brief stints in the NFL with three different teams. Wood also played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Montreal Alouettes. Unfortunately, his promising sports career was overshadowed by the events that led to this devastating loss of life.

The Aftermath and Community Response

The death of La’Rayah Davis and the subsequent sentencing of Cierre Wood has had a profound impact on the Las Vegas community and beyond. Cases like this serve as a stark reminder of the importance of child protection and the devastating consequences of violence in any form.

As the legal proceedings come to a close, the focus now shifts to the memory of La’Rayah Davis and the ongoing efforts to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
